Things You Need to Know About IQ

IQ Score – Measuring Human Intelligence

The Intelligence Quotient (IQ) is a metric used to estimate a person's cognitive abilities and problem-solving skills. IQ scores are determined through standardized IQ tests, which use visual questions to assess analytical thinking.

History & Development of IQ

The concept of IQ was first introduced by the British scientist Francis Galton in his book Hereditary Genius in the late 19th century. In 1904, the French government assigned psychologist Alfred Binet the task of developing the first IQ test to classify children with advanced logical reasoning.

Initially, IQ was calculated as the ratio of mental age to chronological age, multiplied by 100. However, this method had several limitations. In 1916, American psychologist Lewis M. Terman refined and standardized the test, naming it the Stanford-Binet Test. Today, IQ scores are commonly measured using a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 15, providing a more accurate assessment of intellectual ability.

IQ Classification Scale

IQ Score Category Population Percentage
Below 70 Very Low 2%
70 - 85 Low 16%
85 - 115 Average 68%
115 - 130 Above Average 14%
130 - 145 Highly Intelligent 2%
Above 145 Genius 0.1%

Low IQ & Intellectual Disabilities

Individuals with an IQ below 70 may face cognitive and learning challenges, often categorized as intellectual disabilities. The severity is classified into four levels:

High IQ & Genius Levels

Those with an IQ above 145 are classified as geniuses, making up only 0.1% of the global population. Genius levels are further categorized as follows:

Applications of IQ in Life

Studies suggest that IQ is linked to problem-solving abilities, learning capacity, memory, information processing speed, and even job performance. Individuals with high IQs tend to analyze and solve problems more efficiently.

While genetics play a role in IQ, other factors such as environment, education, socioeconomic conditions, brain structure, and nutrition also contribute. The Flynn Effect indicates that IQ scores can slightly increase over time with regular cognitive training.
